Streaming on Amazon Prime now, this four(!)-hour doc about the band/phenomenon of The Grateful Dead is amazing.
I’m not a Grateful Dead guy and never have been. I do think their early albums — American Beauty and Workingman’s Dead — are good, though I find the rest of their discography way too experimental and boring. When it comes to psychedelic rock, I’ve always been in the Pink Floyd camp more than any other.
To appreciate this film, though, you don’t need to be into the music of the Dead or even have lived through the decades where they were most active. It’s simply one of the best artist documentaries I’ve ever seen.
Amazon, Scorsese, et. al. hit a home run with this one. 10/10!
